What’s a Hardscape?

Wikipedia says “Typical small-scale hardscaping examples include patios and sidewalksRetaining walls are often used to create boundaries between hardscapes and earth landscaping features, or softscapes.”

On a larger scale, hardscapes are any feature that covers the bare earth, including roads and urban development.

Patios are particularly popular hardscape feature. Everybody wants a patio.

Common materials used in patios include flagstone, concrete, tile and paving stones. Brick is popular as well.

Patios always need a good foundation of gravel and sand.

Lots of homeowners want a sidewalk to the front door. Other homeowners have a sidewalk, but it’s cracked or uneven. Sidewalks are another popular use of hardscapes.

Like patios, they can come in many materials, but concrete is the most common. Brick is an elegant choice.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls control erosion and separate different parts of the landscape.

Retaining walls are often built of stacked stone or cast concrete blocks. They frequently require a footing of poured cement.
